Types of Individualism

YOUR TASK: Colour code the statements below to show whether they reflect;

  • Egoistical individualism = the idea that individual freedom is associated with self-interest and self-reliance.
  • Developmental individualism = the idea that individual freedom is linked to human flourishing.
  • Both

  Human beings share the same status in that they are all individuals
  You shouldn’t rely on the state to help you out
  The most important thing is that individuals are left to their own devices and don’t depend on anyone else
  Society has to be organised to benefit autonomous individuals, and their needs must be prioritised over any collective body
  Individuals are self-seeking and largely self-reliant
  A belief in personal growth and self-realisation
  Society can be seen as a collection of individuals
  Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps
  The most important thing is that individuals have the capability to achieve their potential
  The state has some responsibility towards those less fortunate
  Helping others to make the most of their abilities is fin
  There’s no such thing as a society – we are all atomised
