In this clip Dr Matthew Taylor gives an interpretation of Genesis chapter 3 through the eyes of Thomas Aquinas, This veiw is arguably still dominant in Catholic theology – that women have a special place but are created in a lower natural order than males. So women are under men,  but not slaves to men and are less ‘rational’ than men. Of course, feminist theologians see such interpretations as the origin of sexism – the question is, are there other equally valid interpretations of Genesis 3? Or, if we accept the sexist point – do we have to reject Genesis 3 as hopelessly culturally captive? PB
