The following letter appeared in the Times 21.3.09.  Write a letter giving an opposing point of view.

Sir,

Baroness Jay of Paddington (letter, Mar 18) says that a change in the law on assisted suicide “would help some people greatly and would not generally be harmful”.  Any such change would fundamentally affect the values on which society is based.  For a caring and compassionate society to function well, we need an agreed notion of “the common good”. We do not live and act in isolation.  Our actions and choices affect others.  Individualism – my absolute right to do with my life what I choose – is destructive of community.   To enshrine that right in law would change the ethos of society for the worse.
