We rely on three things for our verdict of Jesus’ identity: the Gospel accounts, Church and academic Teaching and St Paul’s doctrinal statements. The synoptic gospels (Mark, Matthew, Luke) prevent a very different picture to the Greek-influenced John (Jesus is presented as eternal divine logos or word of God). The synoptic gospels are more open-ended – allowing a variety of interpretations from Great Moral Teacher, Divine Son and Poltical Liberator.
