Augustine (354-430 CE) argues that sin enters the world at the Fall (Genesis 3) where selfish lust leads to weakness of will and domination of male over female. Conflict between caritas (selfless love) and cupiditas (lust) replaces the harmony of Eden. Only Christ can save humankind from this ‘body of death’ (as Paul points out in Romans 7).
