Aristotelean virtue ethics is different from MacIntyre’s in at least three ways. Aristotle starts with an idea of the soul – which separates into its rational and and non-rational sides; he then concentrates on the idea of discerning the mean by practical wisdom (phronesis) which MacIntyre never mentions; and Aristotle assumes one uniform human nature whereas MacIntyre stresses the importance of a tradition or narrative history as the origin of the virtues. The map below is therefore an Aristotelean map.
