Natural Law is driven by a teleological principle that everything, and everyone has a ‘proper purpose’ or ultimate function. According to Aristotle, the function of human beings is to reason well to attain the goal of a flourishing (happy) life. To do this we need to obey the laws which apply to us as human beings – in other words, to find appropriate goals for people like us. Natural Law is thus a deontological theory arising out of Greek teleological worldview – which sounds like a paradox.
