In 1941 Catholic Bishop Clemens von Galen risked death in his demand for justice for the German people seized by the Gestapo and imprisoned without trial. “Justice is the foundation of the state” he argues, and prophetically warns that any state that doesn’t uphold justice will rot and perish from within.
