Here is possibly the clearest explanation of the free will/determinism debate I have ever read. If you use Robert Bowie, you need to note that he places Hume under the libertarian section – but Hume is not a libertarian. Hume’s argument remains one of the clearest defences of the compatibilist position – the argument that free will requires determinism. Few philosophers are hard determinists – this view is more often taken by scientists (who like to use analogies like “the human brain is like a computer” or psychologists such as Skinner and Freud.
