Structure of Thought – Aquinas

For Aquinas, Conscience ‘bears witness, morally obliges or stirs to action, and accuses or disquiets or reproves.’ It is an act, not a power, which depends upon the application of ‘conscientia’ (i.e. practical wisdom or phronesis) and ‘synderesis’ (i.e. a disposition to act morally, using right reason). It is important to be able to compare and contrast this interpretation of Conscience with that of Freud.
