Quantitative easing and other forms of Central Bank support for the UK banking system has a crucial affect on the Bank’s balance sheet. Note how steeply central bank liabilities rose after 2007, and also what this consisted in. The Central Bank, for example, is holding many more government stock than before. Short-run open market operations showed a sharp rise 2008 – 9: the purple sector of the graph.
